What the job looks like

Most gutter overflows are not the gutter. The run itself is half empty and the downspout is packed solid at the top elbow or the bottom bend, so water backs up along the whole length and spills over the edge nearest the clog. You can see it in a storm: one corner of the house pouring like a waterfall while the rest of the gutters behave.

Why it clogs

Where downspout clogs actually form

A downspout narrows at every bend, and the first bend is the top elbow where it leaves the gutter. Leaves fold over and jam there, then shingle grit and seeds pack in behind. The second spot is the bottom bend where the downspout turns out to the splash block or into the ground: debris that made it down slows and settles there.

The third place is underground. A lot of Lake County homes, especially in Deerfield, Vernon Hills, Grayslake and the newer subdivisions, tie the downspouts into buried drain pipe that runs to the street or a dry well. Those pipes fill with the same grit and leaves, and tree roots find the joints. Clearing the downspout does nothing if the pipe below it is blocked, so we flush the whole line and watch where the water actually goes.

What a downspout call looks like

Find the clog. Hose in the top of the gutter, watch the outlet. Where the water stops tells us where the clog is.

Clear it. Elbows come apart and get cleared by hand. Mid-run clogs get pushed through with a hose or a rod. Bottom bends get cleared from below.

Flush the whole line. Until the outlet runs clear, including underground extensions.

Check the fit. Downspouts that have separated at a joint or pulled off the wall get refitted and re-strapped while we are there.

Redirect if needed. If the outlet dumps at the foundation with no splash block or extension, we tell you, and adding one is a small add-on.

What we need to know about a downspout problem

Where does the water come out? A splash block, a flexible extension, a buried pipe, or straight onto the foundation. Each one fails differently and each one gets checked differently.

Is the gutter above it clean? If the run is full, the downspout will re-clog within a week of being cleared. In that case the honest answer is a gutter cleaning with the downspout flush included, not a downspout call on its own.

Has it frozen? A downspout that was clogged over winter often has a split seam or a crushed bottom section from ice expanding inside it. It clears, but it also leaks, and we will show you where.

Is there water in the basement? If yes, say so. It moves you up the schedule, and it tells us to test the underground line properly rather than assuming the elbow was the whole problem.

A downspout that overflows at the top in every storm is almost always a top elbow. One that trickles at the bottom while the gutter fills is a bottom bend or the buried pipe. One that pours out of a seam halfway down has split. Three different clogs, three different fixes, and a photo of where the water is coming out usually tells us which one before we arrive.

If a downspout has been clogged long enough that the gutter above it is sagging or the fascia behind it is soft, the downspout was the cause and the gutter is now the symptom. We will point it out. Fixing the downspout stops it getting worse; the sag is a separate small repair.

How do I know a downspout is clogged?

Water pouring over one corner of the gutter in a storm while the rest is fine, or a downspout that trickles while the gutter above it is full. Standing water in a clean gutter also means the outlet is blocked.

Can you clear underground drain pipes?

We flush them with a hose and test where the water comes out. Grit and leaf clogs clear. If the pipe is collapsed or full of roots, we tell you - that is a drain contractor's job, not a gutter job.

Do you take the downspout apart?

If the clog will not flush, yes. Elbows unscrew or pull apart, we clear them by hand and refit them. Loose joints get re-strapped.
