What the job looks like

Why the stripes

What tiger striping is and why hosing does not work

Rain running over the front lip of the gutter carries oxidised paint, roof grit and airborne dirt down the face in the same lines every time, and it bonds to the chalky oxidised surface of the paint. A hose or even a pressure washer takes off the loose dirt and leaves the stripes. It needs a cleaner that lifts oxidation, some agitation, and a rinse.

It comes back over years, not months, so a wash every two or three years keeps most homes looking new. Dark gutters and homes under heavy trees stripe faster.

How we brighten gutters

Wet down the plants and siding. The cleaner is safe on aluminum and vinyl but we protect the beds and rinse the wall below as we go.

Apply and dwell. Cleaner goes on the gutter face by hand and sits for a few minutes.

Brush. Soft brush along the face, working the stripes, from the ladder.

Rinse. Low-pressure rinse from top to bottom, including the siding below so nothing streaks.

Fascia and soffits. If requested, the same treatment on the boards under and behind the gutter.

Before you book

Whether a wash will actually work on your gutters

Check the paint. Run a finger along the streak. If chalky white residue comes off, the paint is oxidised and the streak will come off with it. If the streak is under a glossy surface, it is probably not dirt.

Look at the age. Gutters under fifteen years old almost always brighten. Older ones with paint that has gone matte and thin may show bare metal once the stripes are gone, which is cleaner but not new.

Dark colours. Brown and black gutters show stripes less but show water spotting and pollen more. They wash up well.

Copper and painted steel. Copper is not washed with an aluminum brightener - it is meant to patina. Old steel gutters with rust streaks are a repair or replacement question, not a washing question.

Send a close photo of the worst section. We can usually tell from that whether you will get the result you want, and we would rather say no from the photo than charge for a wash that cannot work.

Some stripes are not dirt. On old gutters the paint itself has failed and the streaks are bare oxidised metal, which will not wash off. We can usually tell from a photo and will say so up front rather than charging for a wash that cannot work.

Will the black streaks come off?

In most cases yes, if they are dirt and oxidation on intact paint. If the paint itself has failed the streaks are permanent, and we will tell you from the photo.

Is it safe for my siding and plants?

Yes. The cleaner is made for aluminum and vinyl and we wet and rinse the plants and siding below as we go.

Do you use a pressure washer?

Not at high pressure and not from the ground. Hand brushing from the ladder is what removes the stripes; blasting from below just drives water behind the gutter.

Can you wash the fascia and soffits too?

How often does it need doing?

Every two or three years for most homes. Dark gutters and heavy tree cover stripe faster.

Do I need a gutter cleaning first?
