What the job looks like
Gutter guards are sold as the end of gutter cleaning, and they are not. Mesh and screen guards catch big leaves on top and let seeds, grit and pine needles through, so the gutter underneath fills slowly and nobody can see it. Solid helmet-style covers shed leaves but let water skip the gutter entirely once the front edge is coated in grime. Either way the guards hide the problem until it shows up as overflow or ice.
We clear what is sitting on top of the guards, lift or unclip them section by section where they are designed to come off, clean out the gutter underneath, flush the downspouts and refit the guards so they sit flat and drain. Guards that have been bent, pulled loose or lost their clips get re-seated or flagged.
Pricing
Priced from a photo, not an hourly rate
Four things set the price. Text a photo of the front of the house and we work them out for you and send one flat number that includes the cleanup and hauling the debris away.
- StoreysOne-storey is quick. Two and three storeys need taller ladders and more time.
- Gutter lengthA ranch with 120 feet is a different job from a big two-storey with 300.
- DownspoutsEach one gets flushed and confirmed clear. More downspouts, more time.
- Guards and debrisGutter guards to lift and refit, or years of packed debris, add time.

What guards do
Why guarded gutters still fill up
Every guard trades one problem for a smaller one. Screens stop leaves and pass everything smaller. Micro-mesh stops almost everything but coats over with pollen and roof grit until water sheets off the front. Foam inserts fill with seeds and grow moss. Solid covers work until the leading edge gets slick with grime and the water skips past. All of them still need the gutter under them cleaned; the interval is just longer.
The other issue is what guards do to a cleaning. A gutter that took twenty minutes to scoop takes longer when each section of guard has to come off and go back on, and some guards were installed to never come off. We look at what you have before quoting so the price reflects the actual work.
How it runs
What a guard cleaning looks like
Clear the top. Leaves, twigs and the mat of grit that builds on mesh get swept and rinsed off.
Lift the guards. Clip-in and screen guards come up in sections. Screwed-down covers are cleaned from the top and the downspout outlets cleared through the access point.
Clean underneath. The gutter gets scooped and flushed like any other, and the downspouts run clear.
Refit. Guards go back flat, clipped and overlapping the right way. A guard that sits proud of the gutter lip funnels water over the edge.
Report. Bent, missing or rusted sections get photographed and you decide whether to replace them.
Around the county
Where we clean the most guards
Guards are everywhere in the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions - Grayslake, Gurnee, Round Lake, Vernon Hills, Lake Zurich, Buffalo Grove - where builders or previous owners fitted them and then sold the house as low-maintenance. On the North Shore, Highland Park and Lake Forest homes often have high-end micro-mesh systems that still need the annual rinse and the downspout check. Whatever brand you have, the gutter under it is still a gutter.
Before you book
Tell us what kind of guards you have
Screens and mesh. The most common in Lake County. They lift out in sections and go back in. Debris on top rinses off; the gutter under them still needs scooping.
Micro-mesh systems. Usually screwed to the fascia and the front lip. They rarely come off. We clean the surface, clear the outlets and check that water is actually going through rather than sheeting over.
Solid covers and helmets. Water follows the curved edge into a slot. The slot clogs with grit and the curve gets slick, and rain skips the gutter entirely. Cleaned from the top and through the ends.
Foam and brush inserts. Pulled, the gutter cleaned, and put back if they are sound. Rotten foam we recommend leaving out.
A photo that shows the guard from above is worth more than a description. Most people do not know which brand they have, and that is fine - we can tell from the picture and price the job right the first time.
If you are thinking about installing guards, we will tell you honestly which types we have seen work under Lake County trees and which just hide the clog. We do not sell guards, so the answer is not a sales pitch.
Questions
Everything people ask us
I have gutter guards. Do I still need cleaning?
Yes, less often. Guards keep the big leaves out and let the small stuff in. Every year or two the gutter under them needs cleaning and the top needs rinsing off.
Will you remove the guards?
Where they are designed to lift out or unclip, yes, and we refit them. Screwed-down solid covers are cleaned from the top and through the outlets.
Can you tell if my guards are the problem?
Usually. If water sheets off the front of a clean guard in rain, the guard is coated or fitted wrong. We will show you in the photos.
Do you install or replace guards?
Not as a service. We can re-seat and re-clip existing ones. If sections are missing or ruined we tell you and you can source replacements.
Is guard cleaning more expensive?
Somewhat, because of the extra time lifting and refitting. Text a photo showing the guards and we price it accurately.
What about foam inserts?
We pull them, clean under them and put them back if they are still sound. Rotten or moss-covered foam we recommend removing for good.
